AMEC (Advanced Micro-Fabrication Equipment Inc. China) is Shanghai's leading plasma-etch tool maker, founded in 2004 by ex-Applied Materials engineer Yin Zhiyao. Its etch tools are qualified across SMIC's fabs (800+ tools purchased) and, notably, in TSMC's advanced-node lines. AMEC was briefly placed on the Pentagon's list of "Chinese military companies" in 2024 before successfully suing to have the designation rescinded, and it lost Validated End-User trade privileges in a December 2024 US rule.
