Shin-Etsu Chemical Co., Ltd. (Tokyo Stock Exchange: 4063) is a diversified chemical company headquartered in Tokyo, Japan, and the world's dominant supplier of silicon wafers through its ShinEtsu Silicon subsidiary. The company controls approximately 30% of the global silicon wafer market, with SUMCO holding roughly 28%, and the top five suppliers—Shin-Etsu, SUMCO (both Japan), GlobalWafers (Taiwan), Siltronic (Germany), and SK Siltron (South Korea)—collectively holding approximately 80–85% of supply. Its 300mm polished and epitaxial wafers serve as the substrate on which every leading-edge semiconductor is built. TSMC, Samsung Foundry, Intel Foundry, GlobalFoundries, and virtually every major logic and memory fab depend on a continuous supply of Shin-Etsu wafers. Any disruption to its Japanese manufacturing facilities — earthquake, typhoon, or geopolitical incident — would halt advanced chip production globally within weeks, as fab inventory levels are typically only two to four weeks. Beyond wafers, Shin-Etsu is a major supplier of photoresist chemicals used in EUV lithography, the most critical patterning step in sub-7nm chipmaking. Its photoresist portfolio is qualified at TSMC, Samsung, and Intel Foundry. Shin-Etsu Chemical's broader business includes polyvinyl chloride (PVC), rare earth magnets, and semiconductor-grade silicones. FY2023 revenue was approximately ¥2.3 trillion (~$15 billion). The concentration of silicon wafer supply in Japan represents a persistent systemic risk in the global semiconductor supply chain that has attracted government attention in both the US and EU.
